Sketchbook of Ideas

This project was to develop a beautiful and interesting book of ideas through directed drawing. We were to immerse ourselves in different drawing styles and facilitate detailed and complex product ideation through work with inspiration. This project involved deliberate, focused practice in the activity of thinking through drawing.

Our 3 themes of drawings that were to focus on was "Plant", "Landscape", "Animal". Within these areas were to replicate 5 different artist styles. I replicated "Mulberry Tree" by Vincent Van Gogh, "Drowning Girl" by Roy Lichtenstein, "Sailboats on the River" by Theo Van Rysselberghe, "Antibes-Morning" by Henri-Edmond Cross, and "Jeune Fille en Vert" by Tamara de Lempicka.

The materials I used throughout this series was markers, pen, gouache, pencil, and watercolor. I found that I really appreciated the look of the marker the most then all my other materials because I like the boldness it created within the drawing.

What I learned through this process was that there is a lot more to drawing then just putting pen to paper. There is a whole process your mind has to go through to produce something, and when creating consistently I found it more difficult to think through my creating. I had to consistently take breaks and come back to it later. Also, there was a challenge of recreating another artist style which became difficult. You find that you are not going to like some of your recreations and to me that was very frustrating, but I had to learn to appreciate and learn from it rather than talking down to myself.
